Burma Cyclone Children's Appeal
Global Care has launched an urgent £50,000 appeal to provide immediate help to people affected by the devastating cyclone that struck Burma on Saturday and Sunday 3rd/4th May.
The latest estimates are that 100,000 people have died - perhaps half of these are children. At least 2 million people are estimated to have been affected by the disaster - hundreds of thousands left with no food, water or shelter.
The most urgent needs are:
Food, Shelter & Safe drinking water
The current situation
- The majority of those killed were living in small communities among the many rivers and streams that make up the western part of the Irrawaddy river delta region extending to Yangon itself
- The resulting tidal surge moved inland, swallowing up entire villages
- The capital has been declared a disaster zone by the Myanmar authorities
- Reports suggest thousands of homes, roads and other buildings have been damaged or destroyed, and electricity and water supplies cut off
IMPORTANT: Much has been said in the press about restricted access for international emergency teams and this crisis is further compounded by the political and economic situation in Burma.
Global Care is fortunate in that we have partners 'on the ground' in Yangon, currently assessing how best we can respond to ensure both the safety and wellbeing of the children and young people the charity supports and the wider community that has been devastated by Cyclone Nargis.
Funds raised by this appeal will be DIRECTLY USED BY OUR PARTNERS to provide emergency supplies for vulnerable children and their communities, and to support their return to normal life.
Working through our partners in Yangon, this aid will be reliably targeted at those who need it most.
